The view on the Lena River from stone pillars

If by any chance you would be heading toward the Lena Pillars on a river cruise ship, I beg you, do not oversleep the first morning. Otherwise, you won’t see the beauty of the stone pillars on the Lena River in the glory of the rising sun… Let’s see, why I am telling you that. Further, please, find 26 photographs of the best reportage I’ve ever seen. Thanks a lot to InfoFlot’s author and my friends from Adventure.

Received a message from an Icelandic friend of mine. He wrote, “Yakutsk was on Icelandic News Channel this evening.” Later, he explained that it was the reportage about an Icelandic mechanic’ work at Yakutsk Airport. A representative of Iceland Air, that leased 5 Boing 737 planes to Yakutia Airlines, said in his interview, “It is -27, people are showing hospitality.” Read the rest of this entry…

Berkakit - Tommot - Yakutsk railway construction in winter

Berkakit - Tommot - Yakutsk railway construction in winter

The railway is close to Yakutsk. On April 27, 2010, Yakutia-Sakha News Agency reported that the Berkakit – Tommot – Yakutsk railway construction had reached the border of the Khangalassky region. TransStroy-Vostok has already completed 644 km. The 1st train is expected to arrive at Nizhnyj Bestyakh Station (on the opposite bank of the Lena River in front of Yakutsk) in 2013. The construction of the bridge of the Lena River will be started this year.

See more winter photographs taken by Antonina Bochkareva on the bridge over the Amga River (the midst of the Berkakit – Yakutsk railway) in December of 2008. The outdoor temperature was -53C. Read the rest of this entry…

GPS orienteering contest in Yakutsk, April 2010

On April 25, 2010, the day before the snowstorm, Mammoth Yakutsk Off-Road Club hosted the city’s GPS orienteering contest. Further, please, see the photographs of top participants. A team of Pokrovsk (in the first following pic) won the competition.

GPS orienteering is very popular in Yakutsk. Hard to recall, when it gained ground. I think, five years ago. All males/females, who do not spare their own off-road vehicle, consider it an honor to compete in collecting all marks with numbers (this time there were 72) faster than others.

Everything looks pretty funny. It is not enough to find marks by GPS coordinates. It is also highly required to touch a mark and a car at the same time, and all this act must be photographed. To reach a mark, a driver must get his/her car closer to the check point and, if space is still huge, stretch himself/herself as long as possible. That’s why contenders may look in pictures extremely amusing :) Check out.

It was almost the right time to say “Hello!” to summer, but winter said, “No!” When everything was melted and the sun was heating, the snowstorm happened in the Siberian city of Yakutsk. April 26, 2010.

Alaska-Siberia WWII Air Route. From Ivan Negenblya s Archive

Alaska-Siberia WWII Air Route. From Ivan Negenblya s Archive

There is a great man living in Yakutsk. His name is Ivan Negenblya. He is the most honored Yakutia’s aviation worker. His lifetime theme was and still remains Alaska-Siberia World War II Air Route (info on Wiki). He wrote a lot of books on this topic. Besides, he’s got a great amount of historical photographs in his collection.

Currently I and many other friends are helping him to arrange his first international photo exhibition. Thinking to display ~200 archive photographs in Fairbanks, USA. A couple of days ago, I got some scanned pics so to start working on photo materials… and suddenly…

..Another fantastic idea descended upon me. Why not make Alaska-Siberia WWII Air Route Online Photo Exhibition? Funny, but I decided not to wait and have already registered the domain www.alaskasiberia.com. Now the website development is the matter of time. Oh, forgot to mention. The major Soviet part of the Alaska-Siberia route went through Siberia’s Yakutia.

Futher, please, see more sample photographs. Here we go! Read the rest of this entry…

Spring in the Siberian city of Yakutsk. Yakutia, April 2010

Yesterday I took a camera with me. Decided to fix the final arrival of spring to the Siberian city of Yakutsk. Amazing! A couple of weeks ago there were ice and snow on the ground. Now no signs of winter, except the remains of melting dirty snow in the shadows of buildings.

Mostly dust, puddles, lowering sky, winds, the daytime temp like +5C or +7C. That’s the current situation. It seems ice floating is about to start on the rivers of Yakutia soon. When it will take place, it will be pretty chilly. Nevertheless, we are enjoying spring. Read the rest of this entry…
