Read the history of this traditional event and see more pictures.
Previously, I wrote about this event. Here is the abstract of the news story with some history explanation.
On this holiday the Orthodox Church recollects Jesus Christ’s Christening from John Predtechi on the river Jordan. Also this holiday is named as the Epiphany because at the Christening of the Lord there was appeared the Sacred Trinity : the God Father spoke from the sky about the Son, the Divine Son was christened and has been certified by the Father, the Spirit Sacred has left on Jesus as the pigeon. About Christening of the Lord is narrated at three evangelists: Matthew (3, 13-17), Mark (1,9-11), Luke (3,21,22) .
By ancient church tradition, in memory of these evangelical events in orthodox temples before a holiday of the Epiphany the grade of Great consecration of water is made (within one year water is consecrated by a small grade). As a rule, water consecrated in Christening Eve, quickly is took by believers who within one year with a pray resort to its fertile help, therefore the grade of Great consecration repeats and in day of a holiday, after the Divine Liturgy.
In 2006, with the help of the Republic’s Ministry of Emergency, the tradition of epiphany bathing in the Lena River was revived in Yakutia, Russia. Under the legend, bathing with belief allows people to get rid of sins and illnesses.
Aisen Nikolaev goes the first. He is the Head of the Administration of the President and Parliament of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
