This is a 5-min video about Yakutia!

Its creators tried to do the impossible… to show all images of the vast diverse region called Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Think, they succeeded, but, frankly, such a hard mission won’t be possible to do ever.

No more words! Watch Yakutia!

Summer expedition to the Arctic tundra, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia

This time Inga Bysykatova (in the abiove picture), who previously presented the photo report about the Siberian white crane expedition in South Yakutia, shows how the republic biology institution’s field study went in the Arctic tundra of Ust Yansky region, the north-eastern part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia, in summer of 2009.

The mission was to research Sandhill Cranes on the western border of Siberian white cranes areal in North Yakutia, if to be more precise, in the area of the estuaries of the rivers Chondon and Sellyah north of the Tumat village. See the map.

Inga says that before the expedition there were a fact of Sandhill Cranes presence registered at that place, but not proved scientifically.

Today she is able to confirm that the expansion of these birds going on to the West. Sandhill Cranes were officially registered in Chukotka before 1920s, than they moved to Kolyma by 1950s and the Indigirka river by 1990s. Nowadays, they are in Ust Yansky region.

“Our expedition was the first that proved the presence of Sandhill Cranes in the Ust Yansky tundra. That was in 2009… We counted and registered 142 Siberian cranes and 6 Sandhill Cranes,” says Inga.

By the way, it was Inga, who arranged the whole travel to the Arctic. A pretty hard work, I dare to say.

Now feel free to enjoy the summer Arctic of Yakutia, Siberia/Russia, and don’t miss amazing pictures of those bloody-sucking mosquitoes.

Spring ice floating on the Lena River in Yakutia, Siberia, Russia.

Near Yakutsk ice on the Lena River is already passing, reached the settlement of Kangalassy in the North, and everything was fine in Lensk in South Yakutia.

Ice float on the Lena River is like a big event in Yakutia, Russia’s Siberian & Far-Eastern Republic. People are happy about it and worry at the same time.

Happy as it means the spring culmination, the start of constant warm weather and a good reason to go out for shashlik (Russian BBQ), gather snowdrops and admire the beauty of ice drifting along the mighty Lena River. An awesome nature show, indeed!

Worry as spring ice melting and floating might bring the devastating flooding. You might be heard of Lensk that drown totally in 2001 and reconstructed lately by the Russian Emergency Ministry.

Last spring was full of waters and some destructions. Read the rest of this entry…

A brown bear in the Indigirka River, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia. By Katrina Sleptsova.

A brown bear in the Indigirka River.

Something unreal is happening on our facebook page. Ekaterina Sleptsova (or Katrina Slepts in FB) is uploading fascinating pictures of North Yakutia nature with her personal stories.

Here is how she described the photo of the swimming brown bear.

“Since I was 5 I used to go fishing with my father on the upper reaches of the river Indigirka not far from Momski region. He was a professional fisherman then (now he is retired). I dreamed to see a bear. It came true when I was 14. She-bear with two cubs swam directly to our tent. I can still hear its roar…I wish I could picture it. Here is the picture of a swimming bear taken on the Indigirka.”

Further, see photographs with her comments. Click images to see in big sizes. Read the rest of this entry…

Ancient horse and bison found near Batagai in Verkhoyansky region, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia

Ancient horse and bison found near Batagai in Verkhoyansky region, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia

Verkhoyansky region located in North-Eastern Yakutia is remarkable for many things.

It is as extremely cold as Oymyakon and that’s why this area is so zealously competing for the title “The world’s coldest inhabited place.” It is where magnificent stone pillars called Kihilyakh, known also as Siberia’s Shambala, stand on hills. It is the right place to observe Aurora Borealis all the winter long. Apart from, the Verkhoyansky land is full of sensations.

Now it is a lovely destination of various expeditions. Two things made the place desirable for many scientists.

A week ago, my friends and I visited Valera Varlamov’s Yakut horse breeding farm in the area of Mytaah village in Gorny Ulus (district). 4 hours by car westward from Yakutsk, the administrative center of Yakutia, Siberia/Russia. If travelling with cheery friends, four hours go fast and pretty insensibly.

If anyone doesn’t know what to do after museum visits in Yakutsk, to spend one day with woolly stocky Yakut horses and try horse trekking in real Siberian taiga is worth to embark one day travel.
