Ajar Varlamov is like a good Santa. He keeps getting gifts out of his bag. Recently he visited Yakutsk Crafts Exhibition and brought many photographs of Even national clothes, accessories and attributes. The event was held in Kruzhalo Trade Center in March of 2010. See his pics.

On March 1st, 2010, Klavdia & Guerman Khatylaevs gave a concert in the Siberian city of Yakutsk. Apart from them, various Yakut artists performed in that evening. And it can be seen in this introduction video. eYakutia.com says many thanks to its contributor Ajar Varlamov.

Short info:

The Khatylaevs are the spouse. They are the famous Yakutsk-based ethno musicians. Like Stepanida Borisova and Albina Degtyareva, they are well-known in Yakutia and abroad. Last years they devoted themselves to teaching kids how to play Siberian peoples’ national instruments. Precisely, they brought up the children consort “Djesikei.” By the way, you can see their apprentices in the video.

“So here we have That Instrumental from the movie The Piano (you know the one) overlain with David McAlmont’s new, exquisitely sung lyrics inspired by the extremely chilly Siberian city of Yakutsk. Genuinely lovely.” That’s what I found at Metro.co.uk together with the last rumours about Lady Gaga. Fantastic!

“After Paul Morley fell in love with The Glare album he invited David and Michael to perform on his acclaimed Showing Off podcast in December. A seasonal song was requested and it was thought, in the context of the development of the album, The Glare (released October 26th 2009), that The Heart Asks Pleasure First, written for Jane Campion’s film The Piano had a distinctly seasonal atmosphere. It was also felt that the lyrics should be seasonal but not specifically ‘Yulish’. So, instead of jingling bells, morbidly obese men in red clothes and gifts wrapped beneath decorated trees an experience of profound cold on earth was sought and researched. An article about a journey to Yakutsk was located in the Independent. The idea of a coldest place on earth felt appropriate to the music and a new song was born. It’s appropriateness is remarkable because Michael’s music was inspired by a piece about winter in the coldest, remotest part of Scotland,” says Zebralution10’s review on iTune.

The Library of the First President of Yakutia Michael Nikolaev is located in the village of Oktemzy, the place where he was born, on the territory of the Lenskyj Krai Forum education center. It was built in 2006.

The library has many premises. There is a computer lab with book shelves, where you can see the books written and inspired by Michael Nikolaev. However, it doesn’t mean that you will be offered to research the president’s readings only. There are a lot of other literature. Visitors need to pick wished items in a catalogue. The lab is on the ground floor… Oh, by the way, don’t miss a chance to check Margaret Tatcher’s book with her signature and wishes.

Other rooms resemble a museum based on gifts presented to Michael Nikolaev. Paintings, carvings, horse decorations, and many, many other interesting Yakut national stuff. I regret that I didn’t bring along my camera and used a mobile. Nevertheless, they give an idea of the first Yakutia’s President Library.

Work days: daily except holidays. 1 hr work on the broadband Internet costs 60 roubles. Oops, don’t remember the costs of an entrance ticket. Think, ~50-100 rubles.

 The Linden-Museum Stuttgart is presenting in cooperation with the Russian Museum of Ethnography (Saint Petersburg) the exhibition Shamans of Siberia. This exhibition highlights the ancient belief systems of Siberian peoples to deal with the world beyond.

Siberia is known as a land of diverse climates and extraordinary landscapes. Its widely unknown wilderness and the fascinating cultures of its indigenous peoples have always attracted researchers and visitors to learn more about that part of the world. This exhibition highlights the ancient belief systems of Siberian peoples to deal with the world beyond.In their view, spirits choose humans to become shamans to act in altered states of mind as intermediaries between the spirit realm and the human world in times of anxiety and crisis.

The exhibition relates to individual shamans who had lived around the turn to the 20th century. Their costumes and their regalia, such as their drums, are shown. Their songs and practices are depicted in special multimedia installations. Furthermore, contemporary artists show their works that deal with shamanic ideas and motifs.

In this unique exhibition the Linden-Museum Stuttgart and Russian Museum of Ethnography in Saint Petersburg presents more than 200 of the most outstanding objects worldwide on this theme for the first time in Germany. It sheds light into the fruitful international cooperation between both institutions.

A special program will complement the exhibition with music and dance performances by artists from Siberia, film events, workshops, and lectures. A special children’s program will be arranged to stir up interest among younger visitors for these widely unknown and exciting worlds of Siberia.
