I love visiting Yakutsk Mammoth Museum located in the mordern building of North-Eastern Federal University (formerly known as Yakutsk State University).

It occupies pretty small premises, but full of bones and samples right from the Ice Age. Most of all, I like to be in the lab of the mammoth museum. The entrance to that rooms is very restricted, but I was lucky to get inside.

Take a look at photos of the museum and the remains of the ancient Ice Age beasts discovered in the Arctic permafrost in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia’s Siberia. If you are a big fan of paleontology, you would like them for sure.

A couple days ago ‘again:)’, I was talking about languages of indigenous minority-nationalities of the North, Siberia and the Far East in ‘the House of North’ with the most well-known representatives of their mother tongue.

I was blown away by the wide variety of languages used day-by-day in one place for a week. It looks like the event (with extension like ‘culture’) is becoming more important for many people that need to start to learn their language deeply and broadly. Large amounts of native speakers from Yakutia — one big aim — to popularize the culture itself.

It’s huge.

In ‘the house of the north’ where I’ve met so many nations, have heard so many sounds and have seen so beautuful people from Siberia. All people that were singing, dancing, talking and it happened on a completely different dialects but one big fact really united them — the word ‘small’.

Of course, there’s one more important ingredient: the culture itself behaves amazingly. That is, when two or more languages are sounds around you used in all its minutes details, they bring your mind into the wonderful instance that it is actually — language. Read the rest of this entry…

A few words about Sector of foreign literature in the Scientific library of the North Eastern Federal University named after M. K. Ammosov.

Systematically organized collection of worldwide known magazines and authentic books utterly surprises you at the first sight when you enter this room – that was my first impression as an eager reader in the  Scientific library of NEFU.

“The New York Times”, “Scientific American”, “Newsweek”, “The Economist”- such a range of best publications in the periodicals and original books of famous and not very famous foreign writers as well, in the distance of several steps to us, that was a big impact for me. So, how about the New Yorker? That’s not the problem; you can find it just typing on the browser of local computer machine where I’m typing this article, too, for future readers.

Yuri Sleptsov, a Siberian artist based in Yakutsk, Russia

Hereby I present Yuri Sleptsov‘s art works. His drawings are done on a plastic board with the use of a scalpel. Such a technique is called scratchboard or scraperboard (grattazh, in Russian). Learn more about it on Wiki.

Yuri prefers to use the plastic, as it provides the sharp contrast between white lines and the black inked background. This technique is used very rarely. The drawing might be created in the course of several weeks, months or even year. A hard work. One little mistake might spoil the whole art piece.

Yuri Sleptsov started drawing in the scraperboard style in 1991. Since that, he participated in many various exhibits and was awarded for originality and fine technique.

He didn’t graduate any arts schools. Yuri used to be an economist, retailor, auditor. Currently, he is devoted to ethnographic researches. Does a lot to keep Eveni children’s summer nomad camp in Momsky region, North-East Yakutia.

This is a 5-min video about Yakutia!

Its creators tried to do the impossible… to show all images of the vast diverse region called Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Think, they succeeded, but, frankly, such a hard mission won’t be possible to do ever.

No more words! Watch Yakutia!

It’s getting really interesting. It seems the eYakutia – English blog is getting popular in my hometown, Yakutsk. Here is the news I was asked to share with you. I like it much, because it is about what I love, actually. It is about motivating school kids to promote their lovely regions with the means of Internet.

A week ago, the Republic’s Complementary Educational Center (SakhaEdu.Ru) successfully finished the 1st «My Homeland» Internet projects contest among high schools in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Siberia / Russia.

The contest mission was simple. Children were assigned to create websites dedicated to their homelands, i.e. regions, towns or villages. As a result, 19 schools from 10 Yakutian regions submitted their online projects for the republic competition.

So, who are the winners? See the list below.

That’s amazing what Andrei Ivanov does. He works in the International Department of North-Eastern Federal University (known also as Yakutsk State University). One of his responsobility is to spend time with international students.

In this video you can see that he gathered students from Yakutia, Austria, Italy, South Korea, Columbia, Brazil, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan and asked them to say their greetings in their own native languages from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
