So proud of Evgenia Arbugaeva, Yakutian photographer. For the second time in December, her pictures appear on CNN Photos Blog.

This time the major US news media features her 15 photographs of Tiksi, the sea port located in the Lena Delta, Yakutia, Russia’s Arctic.

The story is called Revisiting a fleeting past through innocent eyes.

Here is what CNN Photos writes:

“The now-small village of Tiksi holds many cherished memories for photographer Evgenia Arbugaeva, who recently returned to her hometown in Russia. During her trip, she documented the town through the eyes of a 13-year-old girl she met, who reminded her of herself as a child.”

Touted as the first feature film from the Sakha (Yakut) region of Russia, and the imagineNATIVE debut of young Yakut director Sergei Potapov, Tual baarun tukaru is a cinematic and mythic tour de force of good vs. evil, and a new voice in Indigenous film. In the rural expanse of the Russian wilderness, a mysterious storyteller wanders upon the feudal enclave of the Moyos family and their servants. Aiyyna, the beautiful daughter of Lord Moyos, is transfixed by the storyteller and dreaming of her future when she is abducted by Ehr Sogotokh, a lonely and mysterious castaway. Aiyyna’s fiance, Sette Timekh, son of the regional duke, mounts a campaign to rescue his lover and hunt down her captor with a squad of warriors. But meeting with Ehr changes Aiyya’s life. Reliving his strange upbringing, Ehr understands his destiny and that the battle for Aiyyna may be his last. Jealousy, betrayal and yearning test heroes and villains, a showdown between love and death. Sumptuous cinematography, landscapes and distinctive storytelling make this Beauty and the Beast tale a magical and memorable film.

This is the first feature for Sergei Potapov (Sakha). Born in the village of Suntar in the Yakutia region of eastern Russia, Sergei created several short documentary and dramatic works such as Breath, Once in Yakutsk and Whims of Rain before establishing with fellow filmmakers the Cinema Centre Production company in 2009. In production since then, this is the company’s first large-scale production. The film screened to local audiences in Yakutsk before making its international debut at imagineNATIVE.

The Indigenous people of northeastern Russia have a legend about a magic reindeer that has the sun on its antlers. In this incredibly intimate and direct cinema approach, the experiences of a nomadic migratory trip made by a group of Evenki reindeer herders is told with a timeless and unique style by filmmaker Marina Kalinina. Through 500 kilometres of beautiful landscapes, harsh conditions and minus 45 degree temperatures, this film captures the daily trials, tribulations and routines of one family that still survives according to ancient ways of living.

Born in the Yakutia Russian Republic, Marina Kalinina (Even) has an extensive filmmaking background, from the horror film Naakara in 2006 to the intimate point-of-view documentary Shergin’s Mine and her current documentary series about World War Two. Put’ k solnsu caught the eye of imagineNATIVE programmers at the Skabmogovat Film Festival in Finland earlier this year.

If you wonder, who is Sardana Savvina, so here is the clue. It was her, who made two Yakutian movies screening at The Imagine Native Film + Media Art Festival possible!Similar Posts:

Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is featured in the 1st episode of BBC2′s Arctic with Bruce Parry. It’s called in a short way, “Siberia”.

In this episode, Bruce Parry is celebrating Ysyakh, the Yakut summer solstice celebration, in Central Yakutia and traveling to Even reindeer camps in the Verkhoyansk Range.

Finally, here is the video. It’s more like a teaser. Unfortunately, the full version is not available for the Russian area yet. But… What a fun clip! Hilarious!

Below see the second vid as well.

About Bruce Parry’s travel to Siberia’s Arctic I wrote in previous posts:

- Following the Even reindeer herders in the North (Arctic) of Yakutia, Siberia/Russia (exclusive photographs for eYakutia.com);
- Bruce Parry & BBC’s Arctic in Yakutsk, Yakutia/Siberia (also especially for this blog readers).

BBC2′s episode description

“It’s summer solstice in Siberia, a time of endless daylight and extraordinary festivals.
Bruce Parry journeys to meet the Sakha horse people and a remote encampment of Eveny reindeer herders in the wild Verkhoyansk Mountains, where he finds out how they are embracing the challenges of a post-Soviet Arctic.”

“For Bruce, it’s also a journey of personal discovery as he goes in search of the ancient shamanic religion of these wild northern lands.”

“So here we have That Instrumental from the movie The Piano (you know the one) overlain with David McAlmont’s new, exquisitely sung lyrics inspired by the extremely chilly Siberian city of Yakutsk. Genuinely lovely.” That’s what I found at Metro.co.uk together with the last rumours about Lady Gaga. Fantastic!

Click here to watch the exclusive live performance of ‘The Coldest Place on Earth’

“After Paul Morley fell in love with The Glare album he invited David and Michael to perform on his acclaimed Showing Off podcast in December. A seasonal song was requested and it was thought, in the context of the development of the album, The Glare (released October 26th 2009), that The Heart Asks Pleasure First, written for Jane Campion’s film The Piano had a distinctly seasonal atmosphere. It was also felt that the lyrics should be seasonal but not specifically ‘Yulish’. So, instead of jingling bells, morbidly obese men in red clothes and gifts wrapped beneath decorated trees an experience of profound cold on earth was sought and researched. An article about a journey to Yakutsk was located in the Independent. The idea of a coldest place on earth felt appropriate to the music and a new song was born. It’s appropriateness is remarkable because Michael’s music was inspired by a piece about winter in the coldest, remotest part of Scotland,” says Zebralution10′s review on iTune.

That’s really amazing! If you read that article, you would note my name was mentioned in it Similar Posts:

Misha Maltsev is from the Republic of Sakha, North-Eastern Siberia and belongs to the Yakut-Sakha tribe, of Altaic-Turkic speaking peoples.

Misha Maltsev

In the mid-eighties, when most people in the former Soviet Union were listening to state approved music, Misha 19s curiosity and passion led him to establish underground connections with international experimental musicians from around the world. By the early nineties he worked on TABYK Ethno-Music Festival with a group of like-minded producers and musicians. Today, the Tabyk Festival continues to be one of the leading Indigenous Music festivals in Siberia.

Misha then moved into radio and music production, launching a series of innovative radio shows for Yakutsk State and FM Radio and collaborated with some of the leading performers like Stepanida Borisova, Chyskyyrai and others. After the fall of the Soviet Union, he was instrumental in bringing Siberian musicians to the west for the first time.

At the beginning of the new millennium, Misha left Russia and began working in television documentaries. He has worked with BBC, Channel 4 and Al Jazeera International. As well as developing and researching a diverse range of projects he has recorded and filmed in remote locations across the globe. From travelling with huskies across Siberia (Snow Dogs, BBC2) and exploring Sufi drumming in Pakistan to reporting on the plight of women in Afghanistan (Al Jazeera TV), Misha has gained unique insight into the world’s disappearing cultures.

In 2004 he undertook an arduous three day trek through the dangerous jungles of Laos to bring out the first ever footage of the Hmong who have been trapped and hunted by government troops in this hostile environment for over thirty years. The film was nominated for the prestigious Rory Peck International Impact award, and today Misha continues to campaign tirelessly on behalf of the Hmong and has lobbied at the United Nations in New York and the European Human Rights Commission in Brussels.

Misha completed a MMus degree in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, London University. He initiated a series of highly successful collaborations with radical UK-based musicians and Siberian folk performers which resulted in two CD collections. In collaboration with London’s radio station Resonance FM, he established a series of practical training sessions where SOAS students learnt broadcast skills. This resulted in the creation of Open Air, SOAS’ own student radio station.

Misha continues to work in the field of documentary filmmaking and recent projects he worked on and completed include Shariah in Nigeria (BBC), Forced To Marry (BBC). He is currently editing a documentary about Indian democracy.

He has also done films for Channel 4, Arte, Al Jazeera.

Annotation to the video
Picture source and stories are at: http://askyakutia.com/roadtrip-oymyakon-poleofcold-january2009/. Bolot Bochkarev of Yakutsk Russia arranged a trip to go from Yakutsk to Oymyakon also called the pole of cold. Oymyakon is the coldest village in the world with record temperatures going down to -90 F. The music is Yakut music.

In the previous post “Welcome to Yakutia Photo Exhibition at Warsaw University, Jan. 25 – Feb. 5, 2010” I have already written about Polish students, Agata Fedotov and Lukasz Grajewski, whose photographs are currently displayed in the exhibition “The Sakha Republic Photographic Guide” at Warsaw University Library till this Friday. So… hurry up!

Here is another good news from Warsaw. Lukasz Grajewski published his own story “Daleko na Wschodze” in the popular Polish weekly magazine “Gosc Niedzielny” with 140,000 copies circulation. As he says, of course, the story is dedicated to Yakutia. It is based on materials he gathered in the course of his journey across Yakutia in August 2009.

The article is written in Polish, certainly. That’s really great. However, my Polish is not good at all. I can’t understand either, what it is written. Hope, someone will help me to translate it into English.

To read the whole story, click on the above picture and the full scan copy (thanks Lukasz for emailing it) will be open. Enjoy!Similar Posts:
