I love visiting Yakutsk Mammoth Museum located in the mordern building of North-Eastern Federal University (formerly known as Yakutsk State University).

It occupies pretty small premises, but full of bones and samples right from the Ice Age. Most of all, I like to be in the lab of the mammoth museum. The entrance to that rooms is very restricted, but I was lucky to get inside.

Take a look at photos of the museum and the remains of the ancient Ice Age beasts discovered in the Arctic permafrost in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia’s Siberia. If you are a big fan of paleontology, you would like them for sure.

A few words about Sector of foreign literature in the Scientific library of the North Eastern Federal University named after M. K. Ammosov.

Systematically organized collection of worldwide known magazines and authentic books utterly surprises you at the first sight when you enter this room – that was my first impression as an eager reader in the  Scientific library of NEFU.

“The New York Times”, “Scientific American”, “Newsweek”, “The Economist”- such a range of best publications in the periodicals and original books of famous and not very famous foreign writers as well, in the distance of several steps to us, that was a big impact for me. So, how about the New Yorker? That’s not the problem; you can find it just typing on the browser of local computer machine where I’m typing this article, too, for future readers.

Russia’s Republic of Sakha-Yakutia is pretty proud of being the land, where mammoths could be found nearly every year.

Recently, the Yukagir community area in Yakutia’s Arctic zone has brought many valuable findings for the world of paleontology. Eight years ago, it was the intacted Yukagir mammoth head and foot. They were shown at 2005 World Expo in Japan. A few years ago, there was already an ancient horse remains found. Read the related post with photographs.

Last year was prominent with two events. In August, the well-preserved corpse of an ancient bison was discovered at the same place in permafrost. In Novermber, the wooly mammoth baby nicknamed Yuka was delivered on snowmobiles from the Yukagir area, Russia’s Arctic Siberia, to Yakutsk. A story is here.

And… today… thanks to the Academy of Science of the Republic of Sakha-Yakutia… I had an unique chance to photograph how Russian and international scientists had been conducting examination on palentological findings — the Yuka wooly mammoth baby, ancient bison and horse — in Yakutsk, Russia’s Siberia, precisely at Institute of Geology of Diamonds and Precious Metals, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science.

Take a look at photos and learn more about the Yuka wooly mammoth baby discovered in Russia’s Siberia, and the event. Read the rest of this entry…

Yuka Mammoth Expedition by snowmobiles to the Arctic zone of Yakutia, Siberia, Russia. Photo by Egor Fedorov.

In the early November, Yakutsk-based Vladimir Potapov (fb profile) arranged the winter snowmobile expedition to the Arctic zone of the Republic of Sakha-Yakutia (Siberia/Russia).

The route was Ust Kujga (map) — Kazach’e (map) — Laptev Sea.

The mission was to deliver the remains of the Yuka Mammoth from the area of the Yukagir community, Laptev Sea, to Yakutsk. It is the same place, where the famous Yukagir mammoth head was discovered seven years ago.

The Yuka mammoth corpse was found in the well-preserved condition by Vasily Gorokhov’s community four years ago. It has four legs, proboscis, and wool.

The expedition was filmed by BBC TV Channel and scheduled to be on the air on February 25th, 2012. It will be a 60-min story.

This is a 5-min video about Yakutia!

Its creators tried to do the impossible… to show all images of the vast diverse region called Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Think, they succeeded, but, frankly, such a hard mission won’t be possible to do ever.

No more words! Watch Yakutia!

I am so glad that Roman Sofronov (aka. Taramaan) helps me a lot with the eYakutia blog content. Previously, he let me publish his own awesome archive videos. All his posts came and will come under this tag.

In July 2011, Roman participated in a geobotanical scientific expedition to the area of Mus-Khaya Mountain in Yakutia, Siberia/Russia, and he brought a lot of pics. Find some of them further.

Summer expedition to the Arctic tundra, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia

This time Inga Bysykatova (in the abiove picture), who previously presented the photo report about the Siberian white crane expedition in South Yakutia, shows how the republic biology institution’s field study went in the Arctic tundra of Ust Yansky region, the north-eastern part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia, in summer of 2009.

The mission was to research Sandhill Cranes on the western border of Siberian white cranes areal in North Yakutia, if to be more precise, in the area of the estuaries of the rivers Chondon and Sellyah north of the Tumat village. See the map.

Inga says that before the expedition there were a fact of Sandhill Cranes presence registered at that place, but not proved scientifically.

Today she is able to confirm that the expansion of these birds going on to the West. Sandhill Cranes were officially registered in Chukotka before 1920s, than they moved to Kolyma by 1950s and the Indigirka river by 1990s. Nowadays, they are in Ust Yansky region.

«Our expedition was the first that proved the presence of Sandhill Cranes in the Ust Yansky tundra. That was in 2009… We counted and registered 142 Siberian cranes and 6 Sandhill Cranes,» says Inga.

By the way, it was Inga, who arranged the whole travel to the Arctic. A pretty hard work, I dare to say.

Now feel free to enjoy the summer Arctic of Yakutia, Siberia/Russia, and don’t miss amazing pictures of those bloody-sucking mosquitoes.

Take a look at Inga Bysykatova‘s set of fascinating travel photographs taken during the white crane research travel along the Aldan River in South Yakutia (Russia’s Siberia & Far East).

Ancient horse and bison found near Batagai in Verkhoyansky region, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia

Ancient horse and bison found near Batagai in Verkhoyansky region, Yakutia, Siberia, Russia

Verkhoyansky region located in North-Eastern Yakutia is remarkable for many things.

It is as extremely cold as Oymyakon and that’s why this area is so zealously competing for the title «The world’s coldest inhabited place.» It is where magnificent stone pillars called Kihilyakh, known also as Siberia’s Shambala, stand on hills. It is the right place to observe Aurora Borealis all the winter long. Apart from, the Verkhoyansky land is full of sensations.

Now it is a lovely destination of various expeditions. Two things made the place desirable for many scientists.

In August 2009, I was lucky to visit Canadian wood bisons roaming on the territory of farm in the area of Lena Pillars National Park by the Buotama River. They were transferred in April 2006. See the above pics.

By the time of my visit there were already 39 species (26 four-year-old and 13 calves). Right now the first transferred herd expanded to 47 species. With yesterday’s arrived bisons, the total quantity became 77.
