In the early November, Yakutsk-based Vladimir Potapov (fb profile) arranged the winter snowmobile expedition to the Arctic zone of the Republic of Sakha-Yakutia (Siberia/Russia).

The route was Ust Kujga (map) – Kazach’e (map) – Laptev Sea.

The mission was to deliver the remains of the Yuka Mammoth from the area of the Yukagir community, Laptev Sea, to Yakutsk. It is the same place, where the famous Yukagir mammoth head was discovered seven years ago.

The Yuka mammoth corpse was found in the well-preserved condition by Vasily Gorokhov’s community four years ago. It has four legs, proboscis, and wool.

The expedition was filmed by BBC TV Channel and scheduled to be on the air on February 25th, 2012. It will be a 60-min story.

Event: Nikolay Evstifeev’s “Winter Road. The Land of Fierce” Documentary Public Screening at Diamond House Cafe in Yakutsk, Russia.

Time: 08.00 pm (UTC+09:00), Sept. 14, 2011.

Location: Diamond House Cafe (EPL Diamond’s Trade Center), Yakutsk, Russia.

About the documentary check the post “A Siberian Documentary: The Winter Road. The Land of Fierce…”

About the event:

It was my first experience of arranging a public event. On Monday I met Nikolay. We were glad to meet in reality after one year online friendship. He was in Yakutsk on the way to Moscow. Said to me, he planned to stay n the city for three days only. I exclaimed that it was pity not to show his great film to Yakutsk audience. He said, Why not arrange the film’s public screening. I said, Cool! Let’s do it.

On Tuesday I contacted Ananoty Semenov, a friend of mine, who is in charge of Diamond House Cafe (with 100 seats). He said, Ok. I called Kostas Danilov, who is a big cinema fan and has many friends of the same interest among local TV workers. So, he asked them to come.

In my turn, I posted announcements about screening on my accounts in social media, presicely on Facebook, Twitter, VKontakte, Avtor.Ykt.ru.

And it happened. The next day the Diamond House Cafe was full. Not all visitors managed to find available seats. Cool!

Live Online Streaming

The event was broadcasted online thanks to the Ustream service. Unfortunately, there were sounds only and no vision. In any case, it was cool to have people staying with us! Thank you for joining our event.

Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is featured in the 1st episode of BBC2′s Arctic with Bruce Parry. It’s called in a short way, “Siberia”.

In this episode, Bruce Parry is celebrating Ysyakh, the Yakut summer solstice celebration, in Central Yakutia and traveling to Even reindeer camps in the Verkhoyansk Range.

Finally, here is the video. It’s more like a teaser. Unfortunately, the full version is not available for the Russian area yet. But… What a fun clip! Hilarious!

Below see the second vid as well.

About Bruce Parry’s travel to Siberia’s Arctic I wrote in previous posts:

- Following the Even reindeer herders in the North (Arctic) of Yakutia, Siberia/Russia (exclusive photographs for eYakutia.com);
- Bruce Parry & BBC’s Arctic in Yakutsk, Yakutia/Siberia (also especially for this blog readers).

BBC2′s episode description

“It’s summer solstice in Siberia, a time of endless daylight and extraordinary festivals.
Bruce Parry journeys to meet the Sakha horse people and a remote encampment of Eveny reindeer herders in the wild Verkhoyansk Mountains, where he finds out how they are embracing the challenges of a post-Soviet Arctic.”

“For Bruce, it’s also a journey of personal discovery as he goes in search of the ancient shamanic religion of these wild northern lands.”

I know that there are the Yakut horse fans among eYakutia blog readers. Hope they will like this news story, though it is done by NVK Sakha in the Sakha language.

In the vid, you can see how, in the area of the Kenkeme National Park near Yakutsk, local farmers care their horses, milk mares, and what winter conditions they live in. But that’s not the point of the story.

It is mainly about the start of microchipping Yakut horses in order to track horses’ location, as they prefer to roam and dig grass out of snow across the huge territory of the national park with forest (taiga) and valleys. Besides, the new technology will be used for compiling the database of the Yakut horse. What a good undertaking!

The current microchipping in Kenkeme is the experiment of Yakutsk Academy of Agriculture conducted with its international partners.

This is one of fourteen short films made by Martin Heylen for the Belgian National TV Channel. The episode depicts how ice roads on the Lena River are used and what type of road maintaining works is conducted in winter. In the video you can see, why road workers pour waters on ice, why they strew snow on the surface and etc.

Saying a lot of thanks to Olga Monastyreva for her sharing the link with us. Olga lives in Belgia and she reports that Martin Heylen is pretty famous in his country and his TV Show about Siberia, including Yakutia, was broadcasted on a major TV Channel in the course of one month. Later it was repeated at requests of viewers. Moreover, Martin received a national TV award for those series.

Enjoy a film, though it is in the Flemish language.Similar Posts:

Hurray! Bruce Parry with his IndusFilm crew is in the Siberian town of Yakutsk! What’s he doing here?

Bruce Parry (born 17 March 1969, in Hythe, Hampshire, England) is a former Royal Marine instructor who is now a TV presenter and adventurer, known particularly for the documentary programme series Tribe (known as Going Tribal in the United States), co-produced by the BBC and the Discovery Channel. Resource: Wiki.

I met Bruce Parry two days ago on Lenin Avenue in Yakutsk. Actually he and his team arrived early, on June 17th. They have already visited a village near the town, went for two celebrations of Ysyakh, Yakut national holiday. One was held in Gorny ulus (three hours by a car from Yakutsk) and Megino-Kangalassky region (just in the front of Yakutsk on the opposite bank of the Lena River). Yesterday they departed for Sakkyryr to travel with Even reindeer herders. On the day of the meeting, they visited Epl Diamonds’ diamonds-cutting and jewelry’s factories and drove around the downtown shooting general views of the city.

First, I would love to tell the story of how his arrival happened to be possible.

This is the picture the man with a camera (a program director) asked me to do additionally.
A month ago, I received a message via Facebook saying like that, “Please, get in touch with David, a IndusFilms producer.” I said, “Why not?” I wrote to David, “I was asked to get in touch with you, and that’s all what I know.” After I found out that he and his assistants tried to get in touch with me via my websites YakutiaToday.com and AskYakutia.com, but for some reasons they failed. I’ve got feeling that the mail service considered their messages as spams, but Facebook not

Exclusive images of Bruce Parry’s expedition to Siberia’s Arctic in the post Following the Even reindeer herders in the North (Arctic) of Yakutia, Siberia/Russia.

So… What is the famous Brit explorer and TV presenter doing in Siberia’s Yakutia?

David (the 3rd in the photo) explained:

“We’re doing a 5 part documentary series for the BBC with our presenter Bruce Parry in Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Norway and Yakutia. It’s looking at the Arctic region and discussing climate change, social change and culture from the perspective of the Arctic region as a whole. It is similar to the Amazon series we did last year.”

“It is the Yakutia episode we are working on. The main part of our shoot will be in Sakkyryr for the Ysyakh horse racing festival there and with the Evens, where we will stay for 2 weeks at an Even summer reindeer camp.”

I am really looking forward to seeing all five episodes of the Arctic documentary. Follow BBC’s announcements for the new season attentively. All what I can say is “This is fantastic!”Similar Posts:
