On the first day of 2011, I took Ogonyok, the Yakut laika puppy, for the walk. Instead of strolling snowy streets, I decided to visit the site in front of Yakutsk river port. It is a sort of harbour used as boats parking in the summer, but in the winter it is the place, where boats and ships are kept for the cold period till the start of the next Lena River navigation. Surrounded with snow-covered ices and cold silence, they were like sleeping the sleep of the…

I had a sort of schedule… of what and when to publish… but Vitaly Toko ruined everything. He regreted that he didn’t make it to Yakutia’s Kolyma this autumn. He worked here for many, many, many years. Actually, he spent all his best years in Yakutia and he’s got a lot of photographs of the biggest Siberian region. Two days ago Vitalya created a video slideshow using his pictures of Yakutia and Vyacheslav Butusov’s song «Moya Zvezda» (My Star). Why does he love this remote Northern area? What…

Yakutsk Centre for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring forced news agencies to speak about itself. Forecasters distributed a preliminary forecast of next month in Yakutia. According to the report, in the South of Yakutia, the thermometer may drop to minus 40-45 degrees Celsius, the East expects 34-37-degree frosts, and the coldest places in the northern hemisphere of our planet, Oymyakon (Ojmjakon) and Verkhoyansk, will confirm their brutal reputation. Here the air might be chilled down to -57 and -62 degrees Celsius.

This is one of fourteen short films made by Martin Heylen for the Belgian National TV Channel. The episode depicts how ice roads on the Lena River are used and what type of road maintaining works is conducted in winter. In the video you can see, why road workers pour waters on ice, why they strew snow on the surface and etc. Saying a lot of thanks to Olga Monastyreva for her sharing the link with us. Olga lives in Belgia and she reports that Martin Heylen is…

Amazing how many photographs of Siberia’s Yakutia my St Petersburg friends have on their facebook page Russia. Travel across the country. Check it, you will like it for sure. Meanwhile, here is the info about photographs.

I have friends, Ajar Varlamov and Lena Sidorova. They have a common friend, Anastacia Longinova. Last winter, actually in March, they travelled on dog sleds along the Lena River to the famous Yakutia’s Pillars (so-called stone trees south off Yakutsk). A sort of dog sledding holidays. The winter travel with Yakut laikas (a type of Siberian huskies) took 4 days. They overcame nearly 300 miles. Yup, it was extremely cold and windy, but it didn’t affect them. Guess what memories they’ve got now. Unforgettable! See more winter photographs.

Yup, it is possible to meet wolves in Siberia’s Yakutia, Russia. In this case you can see six of them. The video was recorded by a mobile from the car on an ice road along the Lena River in winter. Delivered by a guy nicknamed as SnuSmumr1k.

Omg, I am already missing a magic winter in Yakutia. Take a look at my favourite Aikhal-based photographer Ruslan Ahmetsaphin‘s winter photographs taken in the areas of Aikhail, Mirny and other settlements of Western Yakutia. It is the land primarily famous for diamonds, but it is also the land of amazing cold Siberian nature — enigmatic forest (taiga), icy rivers, crispy snow, glowing stars, and fantastic Aurora Borealis.

Tiksi, Yakutia’s Arctic sea port, in May is like Yakutsk in April, Moscow and Europe in February. Yet windy and snowy. But it’s time for snow to start melting partly and people to dress in less super warm clothes. No more polar nights. Instead, you begin enoying white nights. An awesome place to visit in Siberia’s North. See more photos taken in May of 2009.
